I am Marta Meers, a young Belgian film director. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in film from Luca School of Arts in Brussels in the spring of 2023, following an Erasmus exchange at Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema in Lisbon. During my second year, I attended the Spring School of Bauhaus University in Weimar.
Previously, I completed the first year in Social Sciences from Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Because I realised that I wanted to express my passion for people and politics in a creative way I shifted to filmmaking.  To explore societal issues through an artistic lens. This path has allowed me to merge critical reflection with creative practice.
Recently, I curated an Iranian short movie event in Lisbon in collaboration with Another Gaze Journal, Women Life Freedom Portugal, and Fabrica Braco de Prata. Over the past three years, I created four short documentaries: Dawning, On est là, Home Is Where My Mother Is, and Viramar. Home Is Where My Mother Is was selected for the Geneva Awards in February 2023 and visualized postdoctoral research by Dr. Milena Belloni at the University of Antwerp.
I focus on filmmaking to create and recreate narratives, often through collaborative projects and documentary filmmaking with an anthropological approach. Gender, ecology, and decolonialism are central themes in my work, as I strive to challenge traditional narratives and perspectives. Pushing the boundaries of traditional filmmaking.
Societal and enviromental challenges and how we as human beings all over the planet - now and then - cope with this intruiges me.  These topics resonate in my work.
Analogue photography also fascinates me, particularly the interplay between digital moving images and static analogue images. This combination of mediums enhances my vision of narrative possibilities.

See you,
Marta
